The Research Circle Trust (RCT) is a not-for-profit organisation with a mandate to promote national and International collaborative work on Health Research, education and training. The RCT through its partnerships and collaborations funding supports students with different backgrounds to pursue studies locally, regionally, or internationally. The beneficiaries of this funding will return to their countries of origin and fill in the research gap in their home countries. The Research Circle Trust fosters an environment suitable for introducing mentoring practice to young and early-career scientists in universities, private and public institutions.
The RCT was founded in 2021 by Hlanai Gumbo, Tapfumanei Mashe and Faustinos Tatenda Takawira. The COVID 19 pandemic triggered the trio to bring heads together and forge a community trust focusing on retaining researchers in Zimbabwe after completing studies abroad and locally as a way to build capacity in preparing communities and the country at large on handling pandemic diseases. Through the RCT will also help in building Surveillance capacity systems that help in quick identification and control of immerging and remerging diseases of public health importance including non-communicable diseases such as Cancer HIV, HBV etc. Many institutions in Zimbabwe do not have a strong tradition of mentoring due to the brain drain of experts, lack of resources and collaborative capacities needed to institutionalize mentoring processes and programs, thus the reason for the establishment of The Research Circle Trust. The Research Circle comes in handy to complement the existing government efforts and other institutions to bridge a gap industry and universities research. The establishment of such a committed institution will result in the development of research capacities in Zimbabwe coupled with the implementation of various pillar programs.
